This highly compressed view of Shotlock Tunnel (Bridge SAC/124) from the south - and the adjacent platelayers' hut - was taken using a camera fitted with an extremely powerful telephoto lens. The area around the tunnel is slightly blurred due to the atmospheric conditions (shimmer caused by heat rising from the trackbed and adjacent stonework). However, despite these techincal shortcomings, the image provides a very rare view of (i.e. all the way through) a Settle-Carlisle Railway tunnel. (Most photographs of 'tunnels' actually just show one of the tunnel mouths.)
