Self-guided tours relating to the construction of the Settle Carlisle Railway and Ribbledead Viaduct

Leaflets

In November 2013, the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust published three leaflets in a series  entitled "Ribblehead Triangle Walks". Leaflet no. 3: "Ribblehead Viaduct and the Navvies" offers a self-guided short (one or two-mile) walk around the area to the north-east of Ribblehead Viaduct to explore the remains of the navvy settlements and the various work-sites associated with the construction of the Settle-Carlisle Railway in this area. The leaflet includes:

  • Details of how to reach the area by car and public transport.
  • Useful references and websites.
  • An informative and humorous sketch map showing around a dozen locations of interest, including the sites of the brickworks, locomotive shed, site office, hospital and navvy settlements.
  • A wealth of interesting, informative, but easy to read snippets of information relating to the construction of the Settle-Carlisle Railway and the remote but beautiful Yorkshire Dales landscape through which it runs.

A 7.4kb pdf version of the leaflet is available to download from: http://www.ydmt.org/assets/x/51239

Audio Tour

The original audio tour (with accompanying map) created jointly by the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority is still available to download from:

If you'd prefer to visit the area with a knowedgable human guide, the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line run a series of Ribblehead Heritage Tours throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn period. For further information about these tours, see the 'Heritage Tours' page in the main part of the FoSCL website.
