The following note regarding Garsdale signal box was provided by Mark Rand (via e-mail) on 8/3/2013:
"The porch (and a replacement staircase) was added in 2008/9 as part of the big refurbishment of Garsdale Station by Network Rail. It contains toilet and washing facilities that replaced a stone-built WC on the down platform against the north end of the waiting room. The new arrangement apparently overcomes the need for the signaller to close the box and sign off every time he" [needs to use the facilities].
This information is confirmed by brief mentions of the project in the FoSCL Magazine on May 2008 (p13), August 2008 (pp22 & 23), February 2009 (p6) and May 2009 (p5 and pp28-32).
