Plate 53 is a context image (undated) showing the Platelayers' Hut (see SCRCA structure 249270) and the south portal of Blea Moor Tunnel. The tunnel is 2629 yards long, reaches a depth of 500ft below the moor and took five years to construct between 1870 and 1875. Also in the image is milepost 249 1/4 (see SCRCA structure 249250).
