Snippet Detail

Figure 31 is an official drawing of the northern portal of Rise Hill Tunnel which runs for 1,213yds through fells which stretch from Rise Hill to Mossdale Moor.  The tunnel has stone side walls and arch at each end and stone and brick side walls and a brick arch wall between.  The two ventilation shafts (deepest 147ft) were used during construction to form additional headings.  At the time of building, the tunnel was known variously as Cowgill or Black Moss.

Plate 71 is a detail view of the northern portal of Rise Hill Tunnel on 1 October 1957, showing detail of the wing wall, using the rock formation as support.

Plate 72 is a context view looking south into the north end of the Rise Hill Tunnel on 1 October 1957.

Plate 73 is a view looking north taken from above the northern portal of Rise Hill Tunnel on 1 October 1957.
