Snippet Detail

Figure 95 shows the track layout at Petteril Bridge Junction and Petteril Goods, based upon an LMS survey of 1942.

Figure 96 shows the Petteril Bridge Junction signalling diagram, based upon information available in 1971.

Plate 227 shows Petteril Bridge Junction signal box.  At this point, Midland line trains came under the control of NER signalmen.  The composite brick and timber NER box contained a Stevens frame of 66 levers.  The box closed on 2 June 1973 following implementation of the Carlisle power signal box.

Plate 228 The Settle & Carlisle Railway ended at Petteril Bridge Junction, where running was over the metals of the NER.  However, Midland influence did extend further north into the goods yards at Dentonholme, west of Carlisle (Citadel) Station.  Numbering of structures in the Midland sequence continued into Dentonholme goods yard ending at the bridge over the River Caldew to the right of the photograph.  Dentonholme goods yard was, to a large extent, under the control of a number of Midland signal boxes.
