Snippet Detail

Pages 18 - 20 provide a brief overview of the Settle Junction area. The relevant portion of the Midland Railway's 1912 landplans is reproduced on pages 18-19. The text on page 19 includes the following:

"The present 31-lever signalbox, . . . is the third to have been built and dates from 1913. The signal box is 21 ft long, 11 ft wide and with a working floor at about eight feet above the height of the rails. The coal bunker provided was made of old railway sleepers."

"For a time, from 1874, Settle Junction had two signal boxes. The South Box controlled the switching of traffic from the north to the Morecambe line, It was renewed in 1894 and removed in 1922."

On page 35 there is an undated B&W photograph showing the railside elevation of Settle Junction Signal Box plus the aftermath of goods train derailment of 11th January 1960. The photograph is accompanied by four short paragraphs recounting the incident and the subsequent clear-up operations.
