Snippet Detail

Penrith Observer, 16th February 1875

We are informed that the Midland and North Eastern Railway Companies have decided to erect a passenger station at Appleby which will meet the requirements of both. A loop line will connect the North Eastern Railway with the Midland at the north and south approaches. This arrangement will prove advantageous to both companies, and it will be appreciated by passengers.

Birmingham Daily Gazette, Wednesday 14 February 1877

MIDLAND RAILWAY COMPANY
The report of the Board of Directors of the Midland Railway Company to the sixty-sixth half-yearly general meeting of the proprietors, to be held at Derby, on Tuesday, the 20th of February, has just been issued, and is as follows:
...
Mr. Crossley reports that ... The Appleby South Junction is approaching completion. The earthwork will be finalised in May, and the whole, it is expected, by July. Mr. Underwood, the engineer for lines under construction by the company, reports that during the past half-year the unfavourable weather has much retarded the progress of the works.

The report was published in a number of contemporary sources and it includes the following statement:

Mr. Crossley reports that the works on the Appleby South Junction have been completed satisfactorily.

Penrith Observer, 10th February 1925

In an article headed "FIFTY YEARS AGO", the original article was reproduced (see 16th February 1875 above) and the following postscript was added:

[The scheme was never carried out, though less than twenty years later a system was started by which certain North-Eastern expresses between Penrith and Appleby ran to and from the Midland Station. The line which was to connect the systems with the Midland Station may still be seen on the south side.]
