Snippet Detail

The two waiting shelters at Long Preston railway station were replaced with new versions during late February / early March 2024. The new structures are more substantial than the old ones and the project has significantly improved the appearance of this pleasantly situated rural station, which lies adjacent to the Long Preston Conservation Area and within the Settle & Carlisle Railway Conservation Area (SCRCA).

Points to note include:

  • The shelter on the down platform (served by trains heading towards Carlisle and Lancaster / Morecambe) is larger than the shelter on the up platform (served by trains heading towards Hellifield, etc.).
  • The down shelter is three bays long and has two entrances.
  • The up shelter is two bays long and has one entrance.
  • In both cases, the upper sections of the side and front (rail-facing) walls are glazed.
  • Both shelters have internal lighting and three proper metal seats. (The down shelter also has three metal 'perch seats'.)
  • Both shelters have been constructed on new step-free concrete bases.
  • Both shelters appear to be capable of accommodating a wheelchair or twin pushchair without completely obstructing access to the rest of the shelter.

According to a Northern press release dated 9th February 2024, the new shelters form part of a £1.9m investment programme to install 35 new waiting shelters at 21 stations served by the company's trains.
