This drawing[1] was produced by the Midland Railway Company for the project to reconstruct Bridge SKW1/39 (which carries the railway over Long Preston Beck). It contains a wealth of information relating to the project, including:

  • A schedule of dates:
    • Centering commenced - Oct 12th 1911
    • Centering completed - Dec 1911
    • Cost of centering - £447
    • Timbers under up line - Feb 25th 1912
    • Timbers under down line - March 3rd 1912
    • Commenced cutting out old arch - March 7th 1912
    • New arch keyed in complete - May 9th 1912
    • Centres lowered ½" - May 15th 1912
  • Dimensions & details of the timber formwork. (This was erected on a foundation of "P.C.concrete 7 to 1" and it supported the arch during the construction process.)
  • Dimensions & details of the bridge, including:
    • The dimensions of the arch (span = 45' 1", width = 27' 3½')
    • New Arch 6 rings (brick) covered with asphalte 1" thick
    • Rise of New Arch 12' 6"
    • Radius of New Arch 26' 6⅞"
    • 3-0 spandrel below crown of arch [added in pencil]
    • Wing wall raised
    • "30,000 Red Bricks 12,000 Blue" and "Ordered all blue" [annotated in pencil]
    • Timbers to be placed under Rails as determined
    • Prior to the reconstruction work, the bridge had a semi-elliptical arch[2] with stone voussoirs and keystones. The replacement segmental arch has a consistent radius[3] and it was formed using six rings of blue engineering bricks that extend to the outer edges of the arch.
  • Dimensions & details of the temporary (cantilevered) footbridge installed for the footpath (which provided access to the nearby gas works).
