Snippet Detail

Figure 40 shows the track layout for Kirkby Stephen station, based upon information from Midland Railway surveys in 1911 and 1912.

Plate 114 is the Kirkby Stephen West signal box in 1972. It had been brought not use in 1894, was of wood construction, measuring 15ft x 11ft 6ins x 8ft with a 16 lever tumbler frame  at a renewal cost of £223 (W & W Committee Minute No 13589, 6/4/1894).  This box was formally known as Kirkby Stephen Midland  as far as the Signalling Department was concerned, as Kirkby Stephen West was also a signal box at the west end of Kirkby Stephen (East) Station on the ex-NER line.  It was erroneously referred to as ‘West’ because of the station siting in relation to the village, thus the confusion.  This structure was closed on 27 October 1974 and replaced by a BR standard type design signal box containing a 20 lever standard 1943 pattern frame, which had been recovered from Kendal.

Plate 115 is a June 1967 view looking south taken from the end of the down platform showing the signal box (this structure - SCRCA structure ref 266480) and goods shed (SCRCA structure ref 266410).  A five wagon shed was proposed in 1872 together with a cattle dock for ten wagons (much livestock movement was obviously anticipated) (SCRCA structure ref 266520). Goods facilities had ceased on 28 September 1964.  Note the differences in the Midland and BR notices.

Plate 116 is a view from June 1967 looking south from the northern end of the down platform. Although the station was still open for passengers, the Engineer’s department had taken over part of the main Station and Booking Office building (SCRCA structure ref 266560).  A small porch had been erected as a consequence (under the smaller gable) protecting the entrance to what was originally a first class waiting room.  Kirkby Stephen was the only station on the line to boast the luxury of a 1st Class waiting room. (see Figure 40, no 8 in the list of buildings comprising the main Building and Booking Office).
