Bill has a degree in geology, is a retired teacher / lecturer and is active in geological conservation in West Yorkshire. He is a member of both the Leeds and Yorkshire Geological Societies and has been leading geology themed walks for FoSCL for more than twenty years. Bill has written a set of "Geological Notes Relating to the Quarries at Helwith Bridge" and researched & documented the types of stone used in the construction of Ribblehead Viaduct and (other key structures in the Ribblehead / Blea Moor area) and the sources of some of that stone - see Littledale Limestone Quarry and Force Gill Limestone Quarry.
