- One mile = 5,280 feet = 1,760 yards = approximately 1,609 metres.
- There are 80 chains in one statute mile. One chain = 4 rods = 22 yards = 66 feet = 100 links.
The 'mile' values applicable to the SCRCA Project lie between 230 and 308 (inclusive) and they are rounded-down to the nearest whole mile.
The milepost article explains why and how these distances were measured and marked.
Where chain values have been provided in this database, they are estimates derived from a set of Midland Railway Company land plans dating from 1911. The landplans used were prints made from microfiched images of original land plans and the microfiching and subsequent re-printing processes resulted in distortions and inconsistencies, which prevents accurate scaling.
As the process of estimating 'chains' was extremely time-consuming (and is of little practical value), the 'chains' field has only been completed for selected (key) structure types. If the chains field is empty, a chains value has not been estimated. In other words, zero is NOT the same as no value (empty).
