The 'Britain from Above' website includes a number of black and white aerial photographs (taken between 1936 and 1949) that show Arcow Quarry and / or Foredale Quarry (along with parts of the surrounding area, including some of the adjacent quarries). The 'http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/' website provides free online access to a small but fascinating selection of low-resolution aerial photographs covering parts of Britain. Some of these images cover parts of the Settle-Carlisle Railway Conservation Area. Pages 20-23 of "Conservation Area Appraisals in the Yorkshire Dales National Park - Settle-Carlisle Railway - Adopted Document" (published by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority in 2010) includes a brief review and history of this site, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. SCRCA Note: Consolidated record for a group of Midland Railway Company boundary markers

There are a number of surviving 'MR' boundary marker posts within the SCRCA. They are all identical in design. To keep the database to a manageable size, a single SCRCA Structure Record has been created to cover all of the markers in the area concerned. The coordinates are approximate and relate to either the first boundary marker identified in the area or the middle marker in a distinct row.

SCRCA Note: Bridge SAC/322 entombed during works to repair adjacent embankment

The embankment immediately adjacent to (and to the south of) Bridge SAC/322 suffered a partial collapse in December 2015 following an extended period of particularly wet weather. As the embankment collapsed, it demolished part of the bridge's south-eastern wing wall. Temporary repairs were made by Network Rail within a few days. Permanent repairs were undertaken during the first quarter of 2017. (Eden District Council Planning Application Number 16/1069 relates to these works.) As part of the… Read more

SCRCA Knowledge Base for Bridge SAC/71 - Force Gill Aqueduct

Bridge SAC/71 (also known as Force Gill Aqueduct) was constructed during the early 1870s to carry the diverted water of Force Gill Beck over the top of the Settle-Carlisle Railway and into Little Dale Beck. SCRCA Note: Fog Hut (237620) removed but access ladder remains

The following note was recorded by an SCRCA Project assessor during a site visit on 10 October 2016: Viewing from the road bridge over the B6479 looking south, there is no evidence of the fog hut and it must, therefore, have been removed at some time in the past.  There is, however, (as shown in the two images) on the down side of the railway a metal ladder that goes from the track bed to the top of the western embankment.  Presumably this was used by the person working in the former fog hut to… Read more
