Church Viaduct (Bridge SAC/9) is 88 yards / 80.5 metres long, 45 feet / 13.7 metres high and has six arches. It was built in 1871 to carry the Settle & Carlisle Railway across the 'New Road' (aka Church Street and the B6480), the garden of Whitefriars (a large residential property) and an ancient footpath linking Kirkgate in Settle town centre with the 'New Road' and Settle Bridge (which carries the road over the River Ribble).
The southernmost five arches are set at right-angles to the bridge deck and they each have a span of 30 feet. The sixth arch has a wider span (37ft 8in) and it is slightly skewed (to respect the alignment of the 'New Road'). The pier between the skew-arch and the other five arches is a 'king pier' (i.e. it is significantly thicker & stronger than the other four piers).
