Bridge SAC/34 carries the Settle & Carlisle Railway across the River Ribble near Helwith Bridge. It has 5 masonry arches and the maximum height above river level is 16 feet (4.9 metres). Four of the arches span the river. The fifth arch provides 'occupation' access between the fields on either side of the railway and its span is significantly smaller than the river arches.
The bridge has been constructed from an attractive mix of materials. The five arches are formed from blue engineering bricks. Gritstone / sandstone has been used to construct the abutments, piers & coping stones, but limestone has been used for the side walls / spandrels (above the arches). A pair of traditional iron railings help to protect railway staff from the drop on either side of the bridge deck.
