The free-standing stone, timber & glass waiting shelter on the 'Down' (northbound) platform at Dent station was officially opened by Mr. Chris Chitty of Railtrack on 5th April 2001.
The construction costs were met by a partnership of organisations including FoSCL, Northern Spirit (the Train Operating Company at the time), Railtrack (the company responsible for the main railway infrastructure at the time), Cumbria County Council, Eden District Council, the Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company, and the European Regional Development Fund.
In a bid to keep-out the weather in this extremely exposed location, the shelter's walls were constructed with a double skin (breeze blocks on the inside, gritstone on the outside) and the shelter is topped with a slate roof. The wall facing the platform boasts two floor-to-ceiling windows (one on either side of the fully glazed door) and a single window is also provided in the each of the two gable walls. To provide additional passenger comfort, the interior boasts bench seating, heating and lighting.
