When the Settle-Carlisle Railway was constructed, it severed a popular footpath linking the village of Culgaith with the nearby riverside fields, clay pit and tile works. There was an alterative route via a lane known locally as “The Pea”. However, this was very steep, so the Midland Railway Company installed a foot crossing to reinstate the footpath.
Over the decades, the number of people using the footpath gradually declined and the crossing was eventually abolished to improve railway safety.
