During the first few years of operation, access to the siding(s) from the Settle & Carlisle Railway (S&CR) was controlled via a dedicated signal box known as 'Ballast Sidings'. However, by the end of February 1879, this signal box had been closed and access was subsequently controlled via a one lever ground frame. This was released via an 'Annett’s key' that had to be collected from the signal box at Lazonby station. The sidings closed on 28th July 1963 and the ground frame was subsequently removed.
