Lazonby Tunnel (Bridge SAC/305) is officially 99 yards (90 metres) long and, at its deepest point, the railway is just over 70 feet (21 metres) below the land surface.
The tunnel was constructed via the 'cut & cover method' during 1871 & 1872 and it is stone-lined throughout, with a stone-faced portal (tunnel mouth) at either end.
The original plans for this section of the Settle and Carlisle Railway show a cutting at this location. However, the plans were altered due to the sandy nature of the ground and the proximity of the vicarage.
