This structure was the first signal box to be located in the vicinity of Hellifield Junction. It was located on the south-west side of the tracks (opposite the south-east end of the 'down' platform) and it was built to control train movements through Hellifield Junction itself, through the station area (in conjunction with Hellifield North Junction Signal Box), and along the two sets of 'up' & 'down' main lines to the south of the station.
The exact date of opening has not yet been ascertained, but it is likely that this signal box became operational on or before 1 June 1880 (which is when the Midland Railway's new station at Hellifield and the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway's line from Chatburn officially opened for traffic).
This structure became redundant on 11 June 1911, when control of the junction was transferred to the second signal box (see Location ID 231190).
