During the steam era, the Dentdale section of the S&C was prone to blockages caused by drifting snow, so the Midland Railway constructed the 'snow huts' (a.k.a. the 'Dent Hotel') to provide shelter and temporary accommodation for workers assigned to snow-clearing duties.
The facilities were basic, but very much appreciated by the people who needed to use them. Coal was stockpiled for the stoves (which facilitated cooking and provided a source of warmth) and, when heavy snow was forecast, the huts would be provisioned with food & drink.
