SCRCA Secondary Reference: Review of Anderson & Fox (1986) for 255900Created on . Plate 75 is an image taken on 28 July 1959 looking north (through Bridge 108 - Metcalfe's - see SCRCA structure 255790) of the Garsdale water troughs. This is another of the comparatively few bridges constructed entirely of brick. The water troughs' tower can be seen on the right of the line. Plate 76 is a view also from 28 July 1959 looking north from the top of the 43,000 gallon water tank serving the water troughs, which was installed in 1907. |

SCRCA Secondary Reference: Review of Anderson & Fox (1986) for 254920Created on . Plate 73 is a view looking north taken from above the northern portal of Rise Hill Tunnel (see SCRCA structure 254840) on 1 October 1957. The Platelayer's Hut can be seen on the left adjacent to Bridge 102 - Handleys (see SCRCA Structure 254950). |

Plate 73 is a view looking north taken from above the northern portal of Rise Hill Tunnel (see SCRCA structure 254840) on 1 October 1957. Bridge 102 can be seen adjacent to the Platelayers' Hut (see SCRCA structure 254920). Plate 74 is a detail view of Bridge 102 in October 1984. The bridge is officially known as Handleys. It shows the typically constructed segmentally-arched underbridge. Many of these small bridges were, for some reason, constructed without a parapet… Read more |
SCRCA Secondary Reference: Review of Anderson & Fox (1986) for 254840Created on . Figure 31 is an official drawing of the northern portal of Rise Hill Tunnel which runs for 1,213yds through fells which stretch from Rise Hill to Mossdale Moor. The tunnel has stone side walls and arch at each end and stone and brick side walls and a brick arch wall between. The two ventilation shafts (deepest 147ft) were used during construction to form additional headings. At the time of building, the tunnel was known variously as Cowgill or Black Moss. Plate 71 is a detail… Read more |
SCRCA Secondary Reference: Review of Anderson & Fox (1986) for 253920Created on . Plate 69 is a typical winter image from October 1963 looking north. In the foreground is Bridge 99 (see SCRCA structure 253890) in course of reconstruction. On the hill above the tunnel mouth the irregular outline of a spoil heap can be seen adjacent to a ventilating shaft (see SCRCA structure 254360 and 254370). The fogman's hut, opposite the signal is, for some unknown reason, facing the wrong direction; it was usual to lay them flat when not in use. |
SCRCA Secondary Reference: Review of Anderson & Fox (1986) for 253890Created on . Plate 69 is a typical winter image from October 1963 looking north towards Rise Hill Tunnel south portal (see SCRCA structure 254130). In the foreground is Bridge 99 in course of reconstruction. The original stone arch of 1873 had to be rebuilt. To allow continuance of traffic, temporary weighbeams were inserted whilst work proceeded beneath. It is likely that the work was conducted by staff from Skipton District Engineer's Office. The weighbeams would be… Read more |

SCRCA Secondary Reference: Review of Anderson & Fox (1986) for 253460Created on . Figure 27 shows the track layout at Dent Station based on information from Midland Railway surveys of 1876 and 1913. In 1964 the up lie-by was recovered and, coincidentally with signal box closure (1981), the sidings on the down side and the crossover were removed. Plate 68 is a view from the south from the end of the platform of the Coal Road over bridge (No 96). The use of brick construction for the entire bridge was comparatively rare at the southern end of the line. … Read more |

SCRCA Secondary Reference: Review of Anderson & Fox (1986) for 253410Created on . Plate 62 is a context view from the north west from May 1966. The fences on the fell-side were built in an attempt to prevent heavy snow drifting on to the track (see SCRCA structure 253040). The waiting shelter on the up line is built into the hillside, a retaining wall provided at the back of the platform (see SCRCA structure 253370). Passenger facilities were removed on 4 May 1971 although the station had been unstaffed for about three years. Figure 27 shows the track layout at… Read more |
