Plate 129 is a context view from 1962 of the west face of Griseburn Viaduct.  The seven arch limestone structure is important as it marks the halfway point of the line.  It is 142 yards long and 74ft high. It was built between 1873 and 1875 to span the valley of Potts Beck, known by the Midland railway cartographers as Helm Beck, and by the estate agents as Waterhouses Beck. Plate 128 is an image from 1964 looking south (and possibly taken from the three arch bridge (/location-summaries/structure-269800)) by which time all traffic had ceased to use Crosby Garrett some eight years before the picture was taken.   The bridge in the background (/location-summaries/structure-269660) had been reconstructed in 1923, using recovered wrought-iron lattice girders to replace timber lattice girders.

Plate 123 is a copy of an old postcard showing a sketch of Crosby Garrett village dominated by the six arch viaduct. Plate 124 is an image from October 1984 showing the west face of the viaduct.  Built of local limestone in 1871, the viaduct is 110 yards long, passes 55 feet above the village and the 43 feet skew spans have brick arch rings.

Plate 122 from August 1961 shows the southern end of Crosby Garrett Tunnel which was cut through the grit-stone, limestone and flint of Crosby Garrett fell.  It was constructed with stone side walls and faces with a brick arch.

Plates 119, 120 and 121 show differing views of Smardale Viaduct.  Plate 119 shows the east face in October 1964 crossing Scandal (or Smardale) Beck.  At 130ft it was the tallest structure on the line and is constructed of grey limestone.  There are 12 openings , each with a 45ft span.  The fourth and tenth piers are strengthened king piers. SCRCA Note: Origin of water cranes relocated to Settle Station

The two water cranes currently installed at Settle station were originally used for 'watering' steam locomotives at Skipton station. After they became operationally redundant following the withdrawal of mainline steam locomotives, they were dismantled by railway personnel and transported to the railway engineering yard at Appleby for safe-keeping. SCRCA Note: Justifying the inclusion of this structure in the SCRCA database

Despite its location, there is no evidence that this structure ever had any connection with the railway. It has nonetheless been included in the list of SCRCA structures because: it lies within the boundaries of the SCRCA; it can be glimpsed from passing trains; and it is old. (It is shown on the relevant Midland Railway contract plan and 19th century maps indicate that a lime kiln existed on this site long before the railway was constructed).
