Plate 163 is a view of Waste Bank Tunnel from the north as seen in October 1964.  Note the Culgaith distant colour light signal and the 285 3/4 milepost (/location-summaries/structure-285750).

Plate 162 shows the southern portal of Waste Bank Tunnel.  Although a cutting was originally planned, a tunnel was eventually cut through 164yds of red sandstone.  The tunnel has brick side walls, invert and arch, with brick portals trimmed in stone.

Plate 161 shows the northern opening of the Culgaith Tunnel and the platelayers' hut.  The short length of level running, the longest on the line, as the route passes from Culgaith to Waste bank, holds a position on the side of the valley above the river Eden.

Plate 160 is a view from the station of the southern opening of Culgaith Tunnel in October 1984.  Having been cut through red marl, the 661 yard long tunnel had brick side walls, invert and arch, and stone faces.  it was constructed between 1870 and 1873 and had one ventilating shaft which was 74ft deep.

Plate 159 is a view of the timber waiting shed on the down platform (/location-summaries/structure-284730) taken in 1962.  The building is more reminiscent of Midland practice elsewhere, particularly in the Derby /Trent area.

Plate 156 is a context view from the north taken in May 1965.  However, a few changes have taken place, and include a new signal box, new fencing, the ivy has been removed and the ornate lamp columns have been replaced by lamps on wooden posts. In line with other Settle and Carlisle stations, Culgaith became an unstaffed halt on 2 January 1967, and was closed to passengers on 4 May 1970.  Goods facilities had been withdrawn on 5 October 1964. Figure 58 shows the track layout for Culgaith, from a Midland Railway survey for 1912.  Note the simplified track layout to the goods yard.  The loading platform was constructed in 1880 to handle potato traffic. Plate 154 shows Crowdundle Viaduct in 1962.  Crowdundle Beck, which passes 55ft beneath the third opening, marks the boundary between the old administrative counties of Westmorland and Cumberland as well as the parishes of New Biggin and Culgaith.  The 86ft long, four arch viaduct was built entirely of stone.

Figure 57 is a track layout for New Biggin, based upon a Midland Railway survey for 1911 and an LMS survey for 1931.  The loading dock near bridge No 271 (/location-summaries/structure-283670) was, by an agreement of 17 September 1926, sold to Gotham Co Ltd, who became responsible for the maintenance of this, whilst the railway naturally retained responsibility for the associated track work. North of Long Marton station were the Gotham Co Ltd Siding and T McGhie’s Thistle Siding.   Figure 51 shows the signalling diagram for Long Marton and nearby McGhies Siding, based upon information available in 1961. Plate 148 shows the Long Marton signal box brought into use on 29 July 1890.  It was of wood construction, measured 16ft 6in x 11ft 6in x 8ft and had a 20 lever tumbler frame.  The box closed on 22 March 1970 when signal arms were removed  and all points were secured, pending removal.  This action necessitated the transfer of control of the McGhie Siding ground frame to Appleby North box.
